Al Jarreau Endowment
You can help us establish the Al Jarreau Endowment Fund, which will provide financial support for Milwaukee Public Schools students to participate in statewide music programs offered by Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA). These programs include Distract and State Solo & Ensemble, Concert Festivals, the State Marching Band Championships, the State Honors Music Project, and more!
These funds will be utilized each year to provide tuition assistance for the students of Milwaukee Public Schools. In addition, these funds will be available to help with transportation and other expenses that make participating in WSMA programs difficult for some students.
Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) Project
The Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) Project was initiated in Wisconsin in 1977 as a means of assisting teachers with the development of performance with understanding in school music programs. In the CMP process, the rehearsal is seen as a laboratory where students can develop an understanding of musical concepts such as expression, melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, timbre and form by being involved in a variety of roles including performing, improvising, arranging, composing, conducting, and analyzing music.
Solo & Ensemble: The festival program for which WSMA is most well-known, Solo & Ensemble, draws in more than 100,000 students each year, representing every county in the state of Wisconsin! “I still have my Solo & Ensemble medals” is a statement regularly heard by WSMA staff from generations of festival participants who take pride in this long-time tradition, which creates memories and skills for life. Through the Solo & Ensemble experience, students learn the discipline of rehearsal, are challenged to advance their musical skills, perform in front of an audience and adjudicator, and receive feedback on their performance.
Concert: “What exactly is a Concert Festival?” Imagine Solo & Ensemble, only for full performance ensembles. Bands, Choirs and Orchestras perform two to three selections – one of which is chosen from the WSMA Festival Music List – for a panel of adjudicators. The adjudicators provide written and verbal critique for the ensemble and award a rating based on defined criteria.
Mike Leckrone Endowment
The Mike Leckrone Endowment Fund was established to support the WSMA State Marching Band Championships, an event that involves over 2000 students annually. Proceeds from this endowment fund will help to cover costs associated in expanding opportunities offered to students and teachers through this event.
The WSMA State Honors Music Project Endowment
The Honors Endowment offers donors the opportunity to endow and name a chair reflecting their particular interest in one or more of the performing groups of the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) State Honors Music Project. Earnings from the Honors Endowment will only be used to support keeping the WSMA State Honors Music Project affordable for students to participate, thus providing continuous funding as designated by the donor.
The WSMA Student Composition Project
The WSMA Student Composition Project is a program at the heart of creativity, encouraging young musicians to artistically take what they are learning in music education and apply it in their own way through original music compositions. Included in the National Standards for Arts Education, composition is a natural extension of the creativity mode of music specified in Wisconsin’s music curriculum guide. The WSMA Student Composition Project is an opportunity to spread their wings and explore their creative side by composing music through a program that recognizes and supports their efforts.
